JusticeWe live in a period in human history, when stories of wrongdoings and injustice are in our face all the time. There was a time, when people didn't know much about what was going on beyond their village (this may be the reason why some people feel that those were safer and nobler times), whereas now, information about the mistreatment of somebody, say, in China, is just a click away.
I think that we are only learning to cope with such level of responsibility: moral questions seem fairly complicated in our immediate environment alone, and yet, now we are asked to respond to things happening all over the globe. Yesterday we had to consider whether it is morally correct to intervene if a person is bullied in our neighbour's family, and today we are deciding whether we are responsible for the protection of people being bullied in another country! I see this anti-terrorism operation as an example of seeking justice on an international level. The speech seems to me very responsibly and tentatively prepared, and represents at least a symbolic attempt at accountability. |
Ai Weiwei - a Chinese contemporary artist, who came into focus of attention after his campaign against the government for unfair taxing. Many people also responded to his campaign by sending in money to help pay off the debt.We can't yet say confidently, how it is all going for us, we are certainly far away from transparency and accountability in international relationships, but the topics of morality, justice and responsibility are definitely receiving huge amounts of attention at the moment, which is bound to have an effect. |
